ReefChronicles Privacy Policy

ReefChronicles is a reef aquarium logbook made by TalaStack LLC. This policy explains what the app stores, what leaves your device, and what you can do about it. It is written to be read rather than to be defensible.

LAST UPDATED 25 AUGUST 2026

The short version. The app works with no account and no internet, and in that state nothing you log leaves your phone. Signing in is optional and turns on backup and sync. There are no adverts, no analytics, no tracking, and no third party advertising or measurement code in the app. We do not sell your data and we never will.

Who we are

TalaStack LLC is the data controller for ReefChronicles. You can reach us at support@talastack.com.

What the app stores on your device

Everything you log is written to a database on your phone: your tanks, test readings, doses, water changes, observations and notes, photos, equipment, livestock, tasks and reminders, and your settings.

If you never sign in, that is the whole story. The data stays on the device, it is included in your own device backups if you use them, and deleting the app deletes it.

What happens when you sign in

Signing in is optional. It exists so your log survives a lost phone and stays in step across your devices. You can use every logging and calculation feature without ever creating an account.

How you sign in

You can sign in with Apple or with Google. We receive your email address and, if you allow it, your name. If you use Sign in with Apple and choose to hide your email, we receive Apple’s private relay address instead and never see your real one.

What syncs

When you are signed in, the log described above is copied to our servers so it can be restored and kept in step. That includes your tanks, readings, dose events and schedules, water changes, observations and their ratings, photos, equipment and consumables, livestock, products, tasks and completions, and your subscription status.

Photos you add are uploaded to private storage. They are readable only by your own account.

Where it is stored

Our backend runs on Supabase, which hosts the database and file storage on our behalf. Rows are protected by row level security so an account can read and write only its own data.

The in-app assistant

The app includes an assistant that answers questions about the app, about reef keeping, and about your own log. This is the one feature that sends your data to a third party, so it is worth reading carefully.

When your log is sent

Nothing is sent unless you ask a question. When you do, the app decides whether the question is about your own tank. Questions about the app, such as “how do I export a CSV”, are sent on their own with no tank data attached.

Questions about your own tank, such as “have I tested magnesium lately”, are sent together with a summary of your recent log: your test readings, and depending on your subscription your dosing and water change history and your observation notes. Photos are never sent.

Who processes it

The request goes to our own server, which holds the API key and applies usage limits, and from there to Anthropic, who run the model that produces the answer. Under Anthropic’s commercial API terms, data sent through the API is not used to train their models. Anthropic may retain it for a limited period for safety and legal purposes. We do not keep a copy of your questions or the answers.

What we record about it

We store your account identifier and the time of each question, and nothing else about it. That is what enforces the daily limit that keeps the feature affordable. Those records are deleted automatically after a short period.

If you would rather not

Do not use the assistant. The Help page answers the common questions from a list written into the app, needs no account and no connection, and sends nothing anywhere. Every other feature of the app is unaffected.

Purchases

Subscriptions are handled by Apple through the App Store. We never see your card details or billing address. We receive confirmation that a subscription is active and store that against your account so the paid features unlock on your other devices.

Notifications

Reminders for tests, tasks and equipment replacement are scheduled on your device from your own settings. They are not sent from a server and nothing about them leaves the phone.

What we do not do

  • No advertising, and no advertising identifiers.
  • No analytics or product measurement tools.
  • No crash reporting services.
  • No tracking across other apps or websites. The app does not ask for tracking permission because it has nothing to track you with.
  • No selling or sharing of personal data with data brokers.
  • No use of your log to train any machine learning model, ours or anyone else’s.

How long we keep it

Your synced log is kept until you delete it or delete your account. Assistant usage records are kept only as long as the daily limit needs them and are then removed automatically. Deleting your account removes your data from our servers.

Your choices

  • Use the app without an account. Nothing leaves the device.
  • Sign out. Your data stays on the phone. Nothing further is uploaded.
  • Delete your account. More, then Account, then Delete account. This removes what is stored on our servers. The copy on your device is not touched, so you can keep using the app offline.
  • Export everything. More, then Export data, gives you your full log as CSV files plus a readable summary. It is yours to keep.
  • Skip the assistant. Nothing is sent to Anthropic unless you ask it a question.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export or delete the personal data we hold, to object to or restrict processing, and to complain to your data protection authority. The app gives you export and deletion directly. For anything else, write to support@talastack.com.

We rely on your consent for the assistant, and on the necessity of performing the service you asked for when you sign in and sync.

Children

ReefChronicles is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has created an account, write to us and we will remove it.

International transfers

Our servers and the assistant’s provider are in the United States. If you use the app from elsewhere, your data is transferred there to provide the service.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that affects what leaves your device, we will say so in the app before it takes effect rather than quietly updating this page. The date at the top always reflects the current version.
